What is a one-rep max (1RM)?
Your one-rep max is the heaviest weight you can lift for a single, full-range repetition of an exercise with good form. It's the number most strength programs are built around, because your training weights for a given week are usually set as a percentage of it — for example, 5 sets of 5 at 80% of your 1RM.
Enter the weight you lifted and the number of reps you completed with it above, and the calculator will estimate your true 1RM using the Epley formula, so you don't have to test a genuine single-rep max (which carries a higher injury risk, especially without a spotter).
How to use your result
Treat the number as a starting estimate, not gospel — accuracy drops the further you are from a true 1-3 rep set, so test with a set of 3-6 reps where possible for the most reliable number.
- Strength phase: work in the 80-90% of 1RM range for 3-6 reps
- Hypertrophy (muscle growth) phase: 65-80% of 1RM for 8-12 reps
- Endurance/technique work: under 65% of 1RM for 12+ reps
- Re-test: every 4-6 weeks as your strength improves
Want a program built around these numbers?
A Fitwithmee coach can turn your 1RM results into a full periodised strength program, adjusted week to week as you get stronger — see our personal coaching plans.
