5 Strength Training Myths Debunked
Strength training is one of the most researched areas of fitness, yet some outdated myths still shape how people train — or stop people from starting at all. Here are five of the most common ones, and what the evidence actually says.
Myth 1: Lifting weights makes women "bulky"
Building significant muscle mass requires a sustained calorie surplus, high training volume, and time — often years — and is also heavily influenced by testosterone levels, which are naturally much lower in women. Strength training for most women leads to a toned, stronger physique with improved bone density, not sudden bulk.
Myth 2: "No pain, no gain"
Muscle soreness isn't a requirement for progress, and sharp or joint pain is a warning sign, not a badge of honour. Consistent, progressive training — gradually increasing weight, reps or volume over time — drives results far more reliably than chasing soreness after every session.
Myth 3: You need to train every day to see results
Muscle is actually built during rest, not during the workout itself (see our article on sleep and muscle recovery). Most people make excellent progress on 3-5 well-structured sessions a week, with rest days doing real, necessary work in between.
Myth 4: Cardio is better than strength training for fat loss
Both contribute to fat loss primarily through the calorie deficit they help create, but strength training has an added long-term advantage: it builds and preserves muscle, which keeps your metabolism higher than fat loss through cardio alone tends to.
Myth 5: Once you're strong, you don't need to warm up
Warming up isn't just for beginners — it prepares joints and connective tissue for load and meaningfully reduces injury risk at any strength level. A few light, progressively heavier warm-up sets before your working weight takes a few minutes and protects the training you've already built.
