Understanding Macros for Beginners
If you've started paying attention to nutrition, you've probably heard people talk about "hitting their macros." It sounds technical, but the idea is simple once it's broken down — and understanding it is one of the fastest ways to make real progress with your nutrition.
What are macros?
"Macros" is short for macronutrients — the three nutrients that provide calories in food: protein, carbohydrates, and fat. Every meal you eat is some combination of these three. Total calories determine whether you gain, lose, or maintain weight; the macro split determines the quality of that change — how much is muscle versus fat, and how you feel and perform along the way.
Protein
Protein is the building block for muscle repair and growth, and it's also the most filling of the three macros, which makes it useful for appetite control. A common starting target for people who train regularly is roughly 1.6-2.2g of protein per kg of bodyweight per day, though your ideal number depends on your goal and activity level.
Carbohydrates
Carbs are your body's preferred, fastest-access fuel source, especially for higher-intensity training. Cutting them too aggressively often shows up as flat, low-energy workouts. Whole-food sources like rice, oats, fruit and potatoes are generally better choices than heavily processed carbs, since they come with fibre and micronutrients attached.
Fat
Dietary fat is essential for hormone production, including the hormones involved in muscle recovery and, for women, menstrual cycle regularity. It's calorie-dense, so portioning matters, but it shouldn't be cut too low even during a fat-loss phase.
How to get started

- Track your food for 1-2 weeks with any food-logging app to see how your current intake compares
- Adjust gradually — big overnight changes are harder to sustain than small, consistent ones
