Why Sleep Is Crucial for Muscle Recovery
You can nail every set in the gym and still stall your progress if you're skimping on sleep. Muscle isn't actually built during your workout — it's built afterwards, while you rest, and sleep is when the bulk of that repair work happens.
What happens to your muscles while you sleep
Training creates microscopic tears in muscle fibre. During deep sleep, your body releases the majority of its daily growth hormone, which drives the repair and rebuilding of that tissue — this is quite literally how muscles get bigger and stronger over time. Skip the sleep, and you're skipping a large part of the process you trained for.
Sleep and hormone balance
Poor sleep doesn't just blunt growth hormone — it also raises cortisol, a stress hormone that can work against muscle repair and encourage fat storage when chronically elevated. Sleep-deprived training also tends to reduce testosterone, another hormone involved in recovery and strength gains for both men and women (at different baseline levels).
Sleep and workout performance
It's not just recovery — sleep loss directly hurts the next session too. Reaction time, coordination, and perceived effort all get worse on too little sleep, which is why a heavy squat session can feel dramatically harder after a bad night than it does after a good one, even with identical weights on the bar.
Practical tips for better sleep
- Aim for 7-9 hours a night — this is the range where most recovery research shows the biggest benefit
- Keep a consistent sleep and wake time, even on rest days
- Avoid heavy caffeine within 6-8 hours of bedtime
- Keep your last hard training session at least a couple of hours before bed if it noticeably raises your heart rate before sleep
- Keep your room cool, dark and screen-free in the last 30 minutes before bed
